Bear in the Big Blue House is aimed at teaching lessons to preschool and early school-age children. In each episode, Bear explores learning concepts such as feelings, the alphabet, nature, science and more with the kids of the Big Blue House and/or out in Woodland Valley. Sorry, MacNeal, while we aren’t sure if Disney has plans to add Bear in the Big Blue House to the parks, we know it will not replace the iconic bears park guests have fallen in love with at Country Bear Jamboree.

The show was created by Mitchell Kriegman and developed with The Jim Henson Company for Disney Channel. The Disney Channel logo with "UK version produced by" text. In February 2004, the Jim Henson Company sold the Bear in the Big Blue House franchise (along with The Muppets franchise) to the Walt Disney Company. The characters and show are currently owned by Disney subsidiary, the Muppets Studio.

Bear attended Hazelnut High and sometimes he looks at his old yearbook, located in the attic of the Big Blue House. On October 19, 2022, the series began streaming on Disney+ with nine episodes missing at time of launch. Home video offerings began on VHS in 1998, with the first DVDs being released in 2000. After the hiatus and the spin-off Breakfast with Bear, a final run of new episodes aired on the Disney Channel in April 2006, with the last episode airing on April 28, 2006. Repeats of the show ceased altogether in May 2007 (December 2010 in the UK). Thigpen was posthumously nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for voicing Luna.

The brand-new experience will reportedly pay homage to classical musical revues in Nashville, Tennessee. Imagineers are working with musicians from the Nashville area so they can capture the authentic sound they’re striving for. Bear lives in the Big Blue House where he is a caregiver for his friends Ojo, a bear cub; Tutter, a mouse; Treelo, a lemur; otters Pip and Pop; and storyteller Shadow. Those normally include solving problems, sharing, cooperating with each other, and developing social/life skills. Bear is the full-bodied, ursine title character from Bear in the Big Blue House.
